Oh August… a month where I did pretty much nothing active at all and September… another month of nothing but healing. Because of a pretty bummer foot injury at the end of July, these past two months, were filled with doing a whole lot of nothing active. I couldn’t walk very far in the boot during the entire month of August and in the beginning of September because it was uncomfortable and also my doctor recommended I try to stay off of it as much as possible. It was really eye opening to see how much I usually do walk in a week, whether with B and C to the park, or with friends or just by myself in the evening to get out of the house. It was also a bummer because I couldn’t go to camp with my team and was very limited coaching wise.
In the beginning of the injury I had mentioned that I was really angry. It was hard for me to sit and hope to feel better quickly and knowing the healing time I had in front of me. I also felt like I had nothing to write about because I wasn’t running and could barely walk around. It was disappointing to me because I had just started getting the routine down pat and C was sleeping well through the night so I was able to get in some great runs. Then the injury happened and it took me a few weeks to get over it and work on focusing on the future. Finally it was a lot of anxiety leading up to the doctor appointment and then how I would ever get back into running.
I had my follow up doctor appointment on September 2nd and I was really nervous he would want me to be in the boot for longer, but he did allow me to take it off. Little did I know that my foot was going to be really stiff and I’d barely have any range of motion for pretty much the entire month of September. Because I have never broken any bones before in my body, I wasn’t prepared for it to feel like that! I did a lot of the stretches and things that my doctor recommended to and hopefully by the end of September, I will be able to attempt to start slowly jogging again.
We had a meet last weekend and I tried to slowly jog to and from places and it didn’t hurt and feel wobbly like before so I am going to try running again next month. Even though it was really hard to take the time off, I knew it was important to allow it to heal all the way and not push myself back too fast. Though it was a long, fairly boring two months on the fitness front I’m glad that is hopefully seems to be mostly behind me. I am looking forward to attempting to run again soon and am so thankful I’m able to walk again boot free!
Here’s to hoping that the end of the year will include some healthy running!
