Cross Country is BACK! Though the fall is still a while away, training begins now and I’m looking forward to another great season coaching. I do love all my track kids, but the goofy group of distance kids are something else special. It’s always an interesting process meeting the new kids who want to come out for the team and trying to remember new names but by the end of the summer, everyone is like a giant family and there are both jokes and many, many miles run. It’s crazy the bond that they form and share by the end of the season and it’s amazing to be a part of such a unique sport.
Cross Country is strange. There is no way to sugar coat it. It’s not that mainstream and most people wonder why anyone would ever want to ‘just run’ for a sport. Even in high school when I was running, I never really thought how strange it was to run, until many of my friends asked me why I wanted to be on the team. Being on cross country helped me develop my love running and now how I act as a coach. Though cross country doesn’t seem to have the same amount of showiness as track and field because there aren’t sprints, I still think it’s so exciting and love watching races.
Recently, a movie was made that highlighted cross country and the team bond that many athletes share throughout the season. If you have the chance, check out McFarland, which was inspirational and I LOVED it! If you’re a runner, you should definitely watch it and if you’re not, it still is a great story. When B and I went to see it, we both enjoyed it for different reasons.
In honor of my favorite season being back, I was offered to give away a copy of the movie and jumped at the chance! All you have to do is enter below and I’ll announce the winner on Thursday. Good luck!
