Home Update: Built-Ins!

Before and After: Built In Entertainment Center in the Family RoomWe recently got a new addition to our home, a built in media/entertainment center! We bought our house in October of 2011 and have been working away on updating it ever since. As they say, the projects at home never seem to end. It has been fun for the most part and we haven’t had any crazy issues pop up yet, knock on wood. I really love how the entertainment center turned out and it opened up our entire front room.

Before the built in was installedI’ve had this “Entertainment Center” from Ikea from way back when I first moved out after college. Once we put it in our house, we knew we wanted to upgrade it but it took us a while to get there and the Ikea thing still worked well. It has surprisingly lasted 5 years and 3 moves, even though it was on its last leg by the time we had it in our house. We had talked about putting in a built in and found this photo and really liked how it opened up the room and had great storage and shelving. I wanted a fireplace and mantle but we didn’t want to install that and so we ended up not adding that in. We knew we wanted our TV to be framed in the center. B started meeting with the builder and discussed what we wanted. I actually wasn’t around for that part so I was nervous to see how it would turn out.

Building the Built in Entertainment CenterThe woodworker who built it send B this photo and he forwarded it to me. It was unfinished wood and still in his shop, but I really liked it! I wanted to make sure he knew that we wanted shelves and cupboards so I was excited to see it on our house, finished and painted. Overall, once we started the project it took about 3 weeks for them to build it and it was all installed in about 3 hours, which was surprising to me. The guys who did it, did a really great job. I’m really happy with all the storage we have now and how much cleaner it looks. It really opened up our room a lot, which I was worried it would do the opposite and would make it feel closed in.

Installing the Built In Entertainment CenterCustom Built in Entertainment Center framing the TVOnce we got the unit installed in our home, I was surprised at how much space we really had. I had already set a few frames and things I wanted on it, but it only filled up three shelves! I went to Marshalls, Target, and Homegoods and found a few more frames and things to vary the heights in the shelves. I still have to get a few more photos printed for a few of the frames, and we have to work on the cords everywhere in the back, but I really love how it came out and think it’s a great addition to our house! I know the storage will come in handy in the future as well, right now it’s all empty!
