January Mileage Recap

Whoa! What a difference this month has been since last. Even though I struggle during the holidays with fitting in running, I still got over 100 miles for the month of December. I didn’t think I would be able to pass it easily in January, but the warmer weather has been helping for sure. It’s motivating to get out there and run when I can wear shorts and a t-shirt most of the time. I also at the beginning of the month decided that each of my runs would be for a purpose this year and it seems to have been really helping me increase my speed a lot. When I don’t run so many miles just to put in miles, I feel like I can push myself harder on the runs I end up doing. I’ve only been running 3-4 times a week, and I feel like I am running much better than I was at the end of last year.

I ran more miles but spent almost 10 minutes LESS running them, and my average pace is way faster! I am really happy with this mindset and I seem to be able to go to the ‘uncomfortable zone’ much easier since I am not running on such tired legs. It makes my running more enjoyable and I’m much happier when I finish. It’s nice to see actual improvement and feel so much better during the run.

As for injuries, I have been a bit cautious of my right knee. It gets a bit sore and I make sure to ice it. I also have been wearing compression socks when I run which I normally don’t do. I have also been using tons of Thera-gesic and rubbing out my legs and foam rolling. It seems to be keeping me feeling decent thus far.


This was probably my favorite run of the month. It was a progressively faster run, but I ran well and felt good the entire time. The next day though I had a super crappy run where I felt like my legs were filled with lead and my shoes were made of cement blocks. Just makes me so thankful for those excellent running adventures when the legs feel light and you don’t feel like your lungs are failing you.


And because I love donuts, this past weekend after my long run, Mary Kate showed me to a new donut shop (now called Primos and totally different) and it’s definitely one of my favorites! I had a lemon blueberry and a red velvet. The red velvet was red velvet but the lemon blueberry was awesome! It was very different and I’m realizing how much I love lemon flavor. She had a cronut that was exceptional. Next time I will get that one and the maple bacon bar and I’m already looking forward to it!

    You have been having some awesome runs lately! I wish I could run in shorts and t-shirt. It’s currently -14C here, so it’s layers, layers, layers for me.
