My First Open Water Swim

A little over a year and a half ago I did my first {very small and short} Triathlon. Since that time, I haven’t really done anything else with Triathlon because I run, and that’s all I really ever do and I enjoy running. I don’t really think much about adding in both biking and swimming and after even an hour spin class my butt hurts something fierce.

B loves swimming. He could swim all day long if he could. He is the one who ‘taught’ me how to swim. I use the word taught loosely because I really don’t know how to swim that well. When I found out I was coming to Kona I, of course, wanted to swim. I also heard that there was a ‘floating coffee boat’ which I figured if I doggie paddled my way out there, it would be an experience I wouldn’t soon forget. In my mind, I imagined this awesome floating platform where you get out and get a latte. I was wrong and it’s a boat that you hold on to and then get a little cup of coffee. Cool none the less and I’m really glad I swam all the way out there.

To say it’s intimidating even being in the same presence of these amazing athletes is an understatement. Then, add water for my first open water swim in my life and it’s quite the experience. Someone who swam by me reminded me that while swimming that I could kick to go a little faster. On the way back though, I felt confident in my swimming and really actually started to enjoy it a little bit more. Dorothy really conquered her fear of swimming, and that was pretty awesome to see too. I just kept thinking, one, two, three, four, breathe, one, two, three, four, breathe. It’s just like when I run and I think right, left, right, left, keep going, right around this corner, you can do this. It was a really cool experience to be able to connect the two and perhaps I may swim more at home when I am feeling a little down about running.
