HIC Review. Wait What?!

So I recently was contacted by the company who makes Hawaiian Island Creation sun care line and I am not going to lie when I first heard from them I was very skeptical of their products. Seems funny that all my product reviews start like that. Anyways, I know about Hawaiian Island Creations because my brother surfs a ton and I know about their clothes and how big they are in the surfing community. Also, I used to travel to Hawaii a lot during the summer growing up for vacations so I was aware of it from there as well. When they approached me about suncreen I was little turned off.

Though I KNOW I should wear sunscreen when I go out and run, I hate doing it. I hate the feeling it leaves on my face, I hate how it smells and drips and gets gross when I sweat. I basically can come up with 100 excuses why not to do it. Deep down though I know I should. They sent me a spf 50 to try and a spf 30 to try. The 50 has yet to be tried since it hasn’t been that sunny and I’m not doing any long runs right now but I’m sure once summer comes and I’m back into training I’ll be busting that one out, but I was shocked how much I liked the spf 30!

The sunscreen goes on nicely, isn’t too thick and doesn’t get in my eyes when it goes get a little warmer and I start to, God forbid, sweat. That is the most annoying thing about having to put on sunscreen since it always runs and gets goopy and gross. This one never did and I had to wash my face to get it off which was great, since after a long run I’m taking a shower anyways. I really didn’t mind the scent and it seemed to be not overwhelming like some sunscreens can be. It didn’t feel heavy, which is another problem I have with a lot of sunscreens. Protecting yourself against the sun’s rays is so important and I’m glad I now know about this product for my running arsenal!

Then I have been in LOVE with the chapstick they sent me since I got it. I used to SWEAR by Burt’s Bees. Nothing compared and I really liked everything about it. I would have like 5 tubes of them at a time throughout my house. I got their chapstick and I was like meh, it’s chapstick, but I actually am a convert to this new kind! It’s amazing. It is the perfect amount of glossiness and I absolutely love the fact that it’s spf 30 rather than nothing in Burt’s regular chapstick and only spf in their sun protecting option. I love wearing it everywhere and it’s my go-to for under every lipcolor I wear as well. It’s the most amazing chapstick ever and I totally recommend that you check it out! Before every long run I throw some on as well just to make sure that my lips are protected, and yes, now I have about 10 tubes littered around my house. If you want to check out either product, find out more here!

Q&A Running Answers

Hector asked some running questions… Since you’ve ran some pretty awesome marathon courses so far…What would be the course/city you would want to race. Second, Medals are awesome…What would you want your dream medal to look like. Third.. What is one song that totally pumps you up when you run.. either being starting or when you hit a wall, what song gets you going on your second wind?

1. I would love to run a few more big races like the dream races. Of course, one year Boston, New York but I have realized that in my past races I love smaller races. I don’t like being around THAT many people and I do much better in a smaller area where I’m not fighting for space. I would love to run Big Sur and I would love to also run more fun races like races in costume. I would love to run Long Beach again but in the near future it looks like that is not going to happen. :)

2. I would want it to be the bigger the better. Who said size doesn’t matter?! I am going to run Arkansas Little Rock Marathon next year just because they are known for the biggest medal. And when I saw biggest medal it’s not joke. :)

Music. All these posts get me going! (here, here, here, here, here, here, here) I love rap music but oddly enough, every time I heard “I’m like a Bird” by Nelly Furtado on my runs I get pumped up? Weird, but true.

Spain asked more running questions… What is your ultimate running dream? As in, is there a race or a running accomplishment you hope to do in your lifetime? (Especially since you have already conquered the marathon!) Do you read running books or magazines? If so which are your favorites and why? Also are there any running blogs or Web sites you really like?

1. I have no idea. I never even though I would run a marathon, let alone more than one. So that was kind of strange to complete that. I would love to run more races, meet more people and have more fun with running. I did want to work in the running industry and now I do so I guess that was another goal accomplished. :)

2. I don’t read running books or magazines at all. I’m into running and I love it, but I’m not a running freak. I was more like that in high school when I was competitively racing, then I poured over books and magazines and websites. Now since it’s something that I enjoy, I take my time and just do it to enjoy it and not overload my brain with all things running.

3. I don’t read any other blogs besides my friends. I am so busy at work and in my personal life and blogging myself that I don’t really find new sites. I love reading about my friends lives and they are not all running related.

Gabrielle asked what my finish time at LA was?

4:41:39

Spamboy asked, “If you were told you had to stop running and could never do it again, what would you do?”

I would be sad for a little bit, but I would find something else to do that I loved that allowed me the same ‘me’ time. Whether it be spinning, yogaing, pilates, or working out in the gym, it would all work out in the long run. Even if I could only walk I would still be happy to be outside.

LawGirl asked, “How do you let running play into what you eat? Are you generally a very healthy eater and running just plays into your healthy lifestyle, or do you run so you can eat what you want?”

I wish I was more healthy, but I’m not. I try to make a conscious effort but it’s really hard for me. I usually eat whatever I want to certain extent. Before a race or long run I will try to eat some type of carb heavy food the night before. I eat a lot of pasta in general and a ton of chicken in general. I have been trying to implement more and more veggies into my routine but it’s tough for me. I’m hoping when I move to the new house next month in our much bigger kitchen, I’ll be more motivated to cook!

AnneMarie asked, “What motivates you to run on days that you may not be feeling it?”

I know that sometimes I get really run down and I have to take a break or else I get in a rut. For me, these times “off” are the most rewarding and can get me right back in the groove. If you have to take a week off, it’s not the end of the world. If I know I have to run and I don’t want to, I just try my hardest to have a good attitude about it and before I leave I take a deep breath and just think you’ll enjoy this once you come back home and off I go. As soon as I start then I’m fine and my motivation to finish comes back.

Chris asked, “It seems many of your races are ran with a running buddy or two, are your training runs with others as well or by yourself usually. Do you prefer having someone to run with in either your training or races? How does it help/hurt do you think? (either having or not having someone)”

I train strictly by myself for the most part. I trained for Long Beach with my friend Ann while she was training for Chicago but that has basically been the only training buddy I’ve ever had. I run up in San Fran with all my friends up there, but I don’t train with anyone at home and I run 99% of my runs alone.

Besides Ann, I don’t like running with other people for the most part, especially if I’m not in training for anything specific. I do like running with other people for fun sometimes when it’s fun to chat and hang out. I miss that sometimes, but I hate running next to people I don’t know like in a big race.

It does help in the idea that you can work together on finishing the distance but I just don’t have anyone to train with.

I love Steaks asked, “When are you going to train for a BQ? :) I’m shooting for 2013.”

Who knows. I get this question a lot. This and how do I get faster. Well, maybe I’ll qualify in Camarillo in October. Maybe I’ll qualify in Malibu in November. Maybe I’ll qualify when I’m 90 in a wheelchair. Who knows. Right now it’s not a HUGE ‘I have to get there right now’ thing, but I don’t think I would ever run Boston unless I qualified, which I hope to do at some point. Vague, yes.

Neil asked, “Have you ever thought of branching out into triathlon as well as running?”

I have considered this! Who knows. I love swimming, but I’m not the biggest fan of biking nor do I have a bike besides my beach cruiser. I do want to do a triathlon one day, but not anytime in the near future. I think I would like to qualify for Boston before I try a triathlon. Who knows. I don’t like sticking to schedules… guessed that yet?

Nicki asked, “Do you always run with music or are there times you run without it? I go back and forth…I’m trying to run without it, but if I’m alone I find I usually need the music. Just curious how much music impacts your own running! :)”

I usually always run with music. The one time I haven’t that I can think of is the LA Marathon but there was so much going on that day that the music just seemed to distract me and make me unhappy, which hasn’t happened before. I like running with it and I like listening to all different things. It seems to keep me motivated.

Endorphin Buzz asked, “Have you ever run outside the USA? What are some of your favorite / most memorable runs?”

I never have, but I am hoping to soon run in Canada, which will be my first run outside the USA! I have run in Hawaii and a few other states, but no where else, mostly I stick to CA. :) I am going to run in Arkansas next year and I hope when I go to grad school to at least get in a few runs in another state too!

My most memorable run was obviously the marathon that won over my heart, the Long Beach Marathon. Malibu was simply beautiful and was another favorite. Other than that, I just like being able to run and running around and enjoying it and smiling. That’s my favorite feeling in the world.

And I’ve gotten a few questions on nutrition and hydration when I run so I thought I would just address those here as well!

Usually on a longer run I will still go with my PB and J method. It works well for me and Gus and other things that are liquidy like that make me sick. On shorter runs I will eat some Sharkies, which are SO delicious, I could eat them for every meal!

As for hydration. A lot of the paths I run have sweet new water fountains that I drink water from. I also am a big NUUN freak and use a handheld like this one for some longer runs. It’s funny because so many people have emailed me with, “I don’t think I would like to carry something like that,” or, “I can’t run with that.” Which I used to think the same way! Now I love my handheld. It takes a little bit to get used to but I really like it and you can too if you give a chance. I hate running with things in my hands but this one works out perfectly.

Q&A Personal Answers

So I got some pretty interesting questions from my readers regarding anything and everything! Here goes nothing as I try to answer them!

Raciel asked if I had ever been stalked?

Actually, I haven’t, thankfully! I have had people recognize me at a few races, which is fun and I love meeting some readers and I think it’s so nice that they come up and say hi. :)

Heather asked me “What’s the weirdest question I’ve been asked?”

I guess the weirdest questions that I get is if my hair is my real hair. I get that kind of a lot. I also get how do I curl my hair how I do a lot. Which I’m still planning on making a you tube video on it since I get so many questions about it. Other than that, not too many off the wall questions.

Amanda D asked me, “I know that you’re going back to school, so,what are some of your professional goals that you hope to accomplish?” And Keri asked “What kind of writing do you want to do? Do you want to write a book one day? Fiction, nonfiction or both?”

Since these are similar, I decided to answer them together. It is a life goal of mine to write a book one day. At least one book. I have many different ideas for different books and they not related at all. I am going back to school with the intent to graduate with my MFA in Creative Writing. My emphasis in my masters program would be in creative non-fiction and I minored in Creative Writing in College, which is where I realized that I love writing and I wasn’t as bad of a writer as I thought.

I would love to write a book on dealing with grief and helping others through grief. I actually wrote a huge paper for one of my capstone classes in college about grief and what I thought would be helpful to share with others. I would love to write more and work on that more for a book. I also think that I would love to write a book about running. No shock there, but I think that not giving up and giving the marathon another chance was one of the biggest things that I’ve done in my life thus far. I think I would call it from Cramps to Champ! HAHAHA. We’ll see.

Professional goals, well right now I love my job and I got into the schools I really wanted to go too and everything ‘professionally’ is going great. I can see myself working here in the future for a long time and I really, really enjoy what I do. It’s a lot of work and can be crazy, but I love it. I would like to see myself at some point having a family, so who knows what will happen then, or even when that will happen!

Hector asked What four people (dead/alive) would you invite to dinner and what would you serve?

Oreman asked, “Are you Danica Patrick, the famous racing driver, or am I getting something very wrong?” and he also asked “When are you going to visit Latvia?”

This is hilarious. I am NOT Danica Patrick, but we do share the same name and have the same hair color. I do get many, many pick up lines about her in a bar when a guy asks my name though. Let me tell you guys, that’s not an orignial line, but being compared to her is a perk! :) I think she’s adorable and would love to meet her one day. Hey, doesn’t Go Daddy need 2 Danicas?! And about Latvia? Um. Not really on my list of places to visit, but hey, maybe one day!

Lily asked, “Ok how do I put this. you look great in booty shorts, how do you get a butt like that?! I am way too self conscious to wear them. Do you have any exercises to recommend or anything?”

Well, I think one of the main things to wear booty shorts is to be confident in them, no matter how you look. Just act like you own it and no one will question you. Also, here’s a link to some random workouts I do for my butt. I do run stairs and donkey kicks will burn like no other the next day! Just focus strictly on the butt workouts and you’ll be golden. :)

Mandy asked, “How’d you get started with the blogging – and get such a large group of followers!? I started a blog a few months ago and love doing it!” and ECA asked, “My question is kinda similar to Mandy’s…did you “market” your blog or do you just know a lot of running people? Also, how do you get all of the cool free running things to review?”

I started blogging, surprisingly enough, when I missed writing after I graduated from college. I had taken a bulk of my writing classes at the end of my college career and was writing a ton. I wanted to blog about running too because it seemed that I had really no outlet to talk about running. None of my friends were runners at the time, and I was used to being in the team atmosphere where I could discuss my split times and mileage and how my run went. I started blogging and wrote just for myself, which is what is think is the most important thing when it comes to blogging.

WRITE FOR YOURSELF. If people read it, great, if you get a lot of followers, great, but you are blogging for yourself. Many people ask me all the time how I get so many readers and comments. I have no idea. I never really ‘promoted’ my blog and I don’t talk about blogging in my real life. It took me about six months to even tell Shea, my BEST friend! I am very open on my blog and it scares me to think that people who might barely know me would read it and judge me. People commented on my blog and I commented on theirs and that is how I made my first blogging friends and had my first readers.

Since then, it’s exploded for some reason. I still write for myself. Sometimes I go back through certain posts and I’m like, “I wrote that?!” I still read certain posts that mean a lot to me and cry, and I still love the fact that I have all these great memories for myself at the tips of my fingertips! I didn’t know many running people when I started, but it seems like I have now made running friends!

As for reviews, I get contacted by all the companies that ask me to review their stuff. I try really hard to make sure that they are done in somewhat of a timely manner and I try to be as honest at possible when reviewing.

Stephanie asked, “Book recommendation time! Offer up a recommendation in fiction, poetry, and non-fiction (if you can, but you don’t have to give one in all three genres) for the following categories: + changed your life + made you cry + would make every person read this for their own good.”

Hmmm, I actually am not that good of reader in terms of being a consistent reader, but I do get sucked into books pretty easily when I pick one up. I wish I was better, but seems like with grad school I’ll be doing some reading….

One book that changed my life is oddly enough David Sedaris’, “Me Talk Pretty One Day.” I read this book and this is the book that had me laughing so hard I was crying at moments and really showed me that I love writing. I love his style of writing and he is an amazing story teller!

A book that made me cry and that I hold truly close to my heart is “Letters from Motherless Daughters.” I guess this was also a lifechanger as well. I try to read this at least once a year and it makes such a difference in my outlook in life and how I approach things with my mom. It’s definitely a tear-jerker but it’s amazing and I really relate to so many of the letters in there.

A book that I think every person should read is Blue Like Jazz. I really like that book and it made me think about my life in a new light. :)

Average A asked, “You mentioned before that since your mom passed, your relationship with your father has become very strained. Right now my mom more or less holds our family together, and I worry that when she leaves this world, my dad and I will never speak again. What happened with your relationship with your dad (if you want to share), and do you have any advise on how to avoid this when that time comes for my family? Or do you find it to not really be that bad?”

Well first, unless your mom has some kind of chronic illness I wouldn’t look at it like that, ever. Cherish the moments you have with your family. Secondly, I guess to sum up my family life, my dad made some choices that hurt many members of my family and since then our relationship has crumbled. It is what it is.

If you think that something is going to happen and you won’t ever speak to your dad again, maybe you should address those issues now with your mom and family. Open lines of communication never hurt anything and really ask yourself why you seemed to already have a strained relationship with your dad. It seems that if you think this will happen there is some cause for that.

Amy asked, “First off how do you always come up with so many different ideas for your blog? For the most part ideas come naturally for me from what I had done for running during the week, but sometimes I want to post but am lacking ideas. My second question comes from looking at your old posts to see some of the things you post about(aka see if I could answer for myself how you come up with all your topics haha) and found one about how to take a nice race picture lol. One picture is of you at the end of your first marathon, by any chance do you remember where that shirt you are wearing is from? It is in my favorite color and it seems like it is really long, which I always love in my running shirts because I’m tall and they are usually hard to find.”

Coming up with Blog ideas can be challenging, especially if there is nothing going on in my life! I try to talk about running and sometimes I do random posts of things I find online and things that have helped me in running/life. I try not to get overwhelmed with writing and remember that I’m blogging for myself and because I love it. When I do look back on posts it’s interesting to see my own perspective a few months down the line! I like to write so I write about whatever I want.

The shirt is a Nike Tank Top and it isn’t made anymore, but I found them at Nordstrom Rack. They are very long and that’s why I like them :)

Alicia asked, “Does your mom have any siblings and if so are you close to them? What is your favorite memory of your mom?”

My mom has one sister and I consider her and my cousins my closest family! Her daughters are like my sisters. I grew up very close with my mom’s family and still talk to them all the time and I love them very much.

I don’t have one specific memory of my mom that stands out as my favorite, but I do remember her always telling me how proud she was of me. I think she unconsciously made that a  huge effort in her life when talking with me and she would always tell me that and that means so much to me now. :)

Liane asked, “What is the best piece of advice you’ve learned from your blogging experience that you would pass along to new bloggers?”Also, what are you looking forward to the most on your visit up to the Northern Tundra?”

I think the biggest piece of advice I would give someone who wanted to blog is to be open-minded, don’t take things personally and write for yourself. Write and don’t care what other people think, it’s for yourself. Blogging is a way of journaling online. So many people want the most followers, want the most readers or whatever, but really, then why are you blogging? I blog so that I have something to look back on and enjoy reading about myself. I think that is the best thing that I have gotten out of it.

Canada! Well I am looking forward to hopefully seeing some whales and seeing Bushard Gardens and going to Canada in the first place! I have never been on a cruise or to Canada so it should be amazing!

Adoption April Series: My Birthparents

Welcome back to Adoption April! This post is going to touch on all the facts that I know about my birth parents and how I feel about them, and if I want to meet them and why.

I know my birth mom’s name and my birth dad’s name. There isn’t much information on either of them that my parents collected from them but I am glad that I know their names. I also know their birthdays and I know that she was born in the Midwest.

People always ask me if I want to meet them both or my birth mom. I do! I would love to meet her, and I just haven’t actively pursued it, but I am getting more and more interested in it. I am considering looking more into a private investigator and see what my options are. I know that is expensive though, so that would also take some time. Finding people isn’t the easiest thing in the world. I would also completely understand if she or my birth father didn’t want to meet me though, but I feel that it would be important at this time to get a family medical history report since so many diseases are genetic. I would hope that they would understand that and would be able to give me the family medical report. With that alone I think I would be happy as well.

I know I would be okay if they didn’t want to meet me, because I still think about their situation. Sometimes I wonder what she looks like, and what he looks like, even if they are still together or still talk. I also wonder if I would have any other siblings through either of them. Isn’t that weird to think about? I think that it would be cool to meet them, and see what their lives are like. I don’t want anything from either of them at all, and if they weren’t comfortable with meeting/talking/communication, I wouldn’t force it upon them either. I couldn’t even imagine the shock that they both must have had when I decided to enter the world. I know they didn’t not want me, and I think it would be cool to meet them but I wouldn’t feel rejected or crushed if they didn’t want to meet me.

As of right now, I have no idea where they are, what their lives are like, what they look like, or anything of that matter, but it does interest me. Also if I were to communicate with them, I would understand both of their apprehension if there was some. What would you do if your daughter that you hadn’t seen or heard from in 25 years all of a sudden reached out to you? It would blow my mind. I think there has to be a level of curiousness of both my and her mind though. Is that curiousness enough to pursue communication? I don’t know. Time will tell.

I also realize that they will never replace my parents, and I would never even think that that would happen. I feel that if I was seeking them out because I felt abandoned or like I didn’t fit in with my family, or if  I felt unwanted, it would be a different issue, because then I realize that my feelings would be hurt if they didn’t want to have anything to do with me.

I am glad they made the decision to give me up. I have lived such an amazing life with great people in my life and having them unknowingly give me that opportunity gives me the utmost respect for them.

If you have any questions for the next and and last Adoption April post, please feel free to email me at [email protected] I have a few to answer next week. I hope you all have enjoyed Adoption April!

Here’s a funny picture of me and my brother.

Fun times with Pepper Spray

People have been asking about my new Pepper Spray and where I got it and how I run with it. Some have even asked why I would need pepper spray. Well since I’m no Karate Kid and not all my paths are filled with rainbows and daisies, I would much rather be safe than sorry. There are some ‘come as you are areas’ of the LBC, and when you run over 10 miles anywhere, that puts you pretty far away from your home. Believe me, I’ve thought about what I would do if I got attacked.

Scream. Though I don’t know if that would help, actually I highly doubt that would help.

Kick and Bite. I have considered both of these to be somewhat valid options, minus the fact that I’d probably get punched in the face and that would just ruin my teeth and I’d just start crying. Kicking is a good option though because my legs are fairly strong. Running can do that for you.

I’ve considered punching, but I know that would be worthless so that isn’t even in my bad of tricks. I figure why waste my energy on that when I know it is going to do nothing.

Then I thought about getting a taser, but that just sounds more fun than I’m sure it actually is and I just know I would taser myself. I think the thought of having a taser is pretty hilarious though.

The next best thing? PEPPER SPRAY! Now, I hope to never have to use this, but I’d rather be over-prepared than under-prepared. So I wanted to let you all know that now I’m carrying my iFitness belt and inside my belt I put the smallest pepper spray I could find. I also have attached it to the belt and flipped it up into the belt to keep it from bouncing and it works perfectly. I feel much safer with it and I’m glad I run with it now.

Someone asked me where I find pepper spray like mine that is small enough to run with, well I have some versions in my A-store as well!

First we have the Sabre Pepper Spray for $7.35 and it comes in pink or black :)

Then we have the Jogger Pepper Spray for $10.50 and it comes in black.

Also, the World’s Hottest Police Spray for $8.70 in black.

The Pepper Mace Jogger Spray is the last option and it comes with a little jogging strap that you can put on your hand when running and it’s $7.00.

Last and best, in my opinion we have the Sabre Pink Pepper Spray with keychain for $8.00.

Though I haven’t had to use my pepper spray yet, I want to be prepared if anytime comes and be sure that I am safe out while running!

xoxo
