A rainy DNS and 2000 meters

So this weekend I woke up Saturday morning and heard it pouring rain. Not just pitter patter, little drizzle here and there. No, this rain was like down-pouring going to flood the area my car was parked rain. Again. I seriously haven’t ever seen it rain this much or this hard so much pretty much my entire in my life. I got ready for the 5k and went out to my car where it was flooded and I just kept thinking that if I ran in the race I would most likely get sick. I have my 20 miler for LA Marathon training next weekend and having the immune system that I do, I had the gut feeling to forgo the 5k to keep my health up and not jeopardize my 20 miler.

I was a little disappointed that I decided to not go but I made it up by biking 5 miles later and doing weights at the gym. I know I made the right decision in the long term though and I’m glad I’m not sick. I also have been icing my lower back on and off because it has been a little sore. Then Sunday I realized that it’s pretty much game time for LA Marathon. 20 days away and I need to step it up. I have been slacking lately and not really been focused on training consistently. So back to the gym I went where I kicked my butt into high gear. I worked out for two and a half hours and swam 2000 meters, which is 40 laps. I was exhausted by the time I got out but felt better and back on the training train.

I really need to focus on these next few weeks as it’s crunch time and I need to get in my miles and make sure I am adequately prepared come race day. Today is thankfully a rest day, and I’m a little sore from yesterday and getting back after it, but I’m looking forward to a good 7 miler tomorrow morning and hitting it hard these last few weeks before the big race. I can’t believe it’s already March! Where does the time go? I’m starting to think about races after LA Marathon too. There are a few races around here that I’ve been looking at and I’ve posted an article on the Examiner about some local races to check out.

Now that the Olympics are done, I’m sad, but I’m looking forward to the drama tonight that is the bachelor!

So the 5k was a bust, but I don’t have seal cough and am laying sick in bed, so that is a win. Check back in tomorrow for a review of my favorite Oh Yeah! Bars :) They are my new life source!

xoxo

I think you made the right decision! I can’t believe you swam 40 laps! Way to go!

yeah 2000 meters is sick! good job! i run out of breath just sitting here thinking about doing 4 laps, much less 40…

I love that you are keeping up with the swimming and getting better and going further each time! I have never heard of these Oh Yeah! bars, I am going to have to give it a try! !:)

Curious…do you feel light-headed after a swim workout? If I swim longer than 30 minutes, I am a little wobbly when I get out of the pool.

Probably a good call… you need to stay healthy right now!

You should fly up and run the Napa Valley Marathon with us. Then you’ll get in your 20-miles (with a 10K cool down) AND a medal :-)

Yes, I know, I am a genius…

I think you made the right decision. You are a swimming rock star too! Can’t wait for the bachelor either :)

sometimes you just have to look at the big picture even tho it sucks :( probably a smart move to sit it out, esp if you are known to get sick!! no sickies for LA marathon!

Good decision, and you kicked butt in the gym!

I think you made a good decision not racing!

I think you made the right decision to forgo the 5K. There is no need to run in the pouring rain like that and get sick. Man, it WAS coming down! It was weird how it was such a beautiful day came Sunday. You still have time to get some good runs in!

That was a good call…the 5K was just a “throw away” race anyway!

Def a good call. Way to work that pool!

Sometimes ya just gotta do what’s best for YOU and not race. Here’s to your health girly! Now put on that game face for L.A.!!!

Just found your blog, it’s great! I actually ran the Hope and Harmony race on Saturday, it was fun! It was pretty wild, it was pouring until about 1 minute before the start and then all the rain ceased. I also think there were many other runners who didn’t show because of the rain. If you get sick easily because of the weather you made the right decision.

Take Care!

I think you made the right decision. It is no fun being sick.

I agree with everyone else that you made the right decision. We don’t want seal cough to come back!

Also? I read Kelly’s comment above as “way to work that poo!” Which made me laugh really hard in my office. :)

Good on you for listening to your body and doing what was right for you. You definitely did make the right decision and I’m sure your body will thank you for it :)

Glad you listened to your body and the weather and did what was best for you in the long run! Can’t wait to hear how your 20 miler goes this weekend. Happy running. :)

You did the right thing. Don’t feel guilty!!

Smart move listening to your inner voice. Better safe than sick!

I think you made a smart decision about the 5k! It’s not fun running in the rain anyway! Great job on your hardcore workout yesterday! I wish I had a gym with a pool to go to! I would love to do some swimming as cross training! Keep up the hard work girl!

You totally made the right decision on not doing the 5K. As for being back on the training train… whew! I can’t believe you did 2 1/2 hrs at the gym! My hat’s off to you. You’re going to rock it, I’m excited for you!

Good decision, dude. 5k vs. being healthy for your 20 is a no-contest decision for me, so I’m glad you are keeping it healthy!

Get ready for more rain because it’s POURING here today!

Ok so really I’m a cyclist who wished she was also a runner. I must say even though I’m not a runner your blog is inspiring. You are dedicated to your sport. I wasn’t really wanting to workout today but reading this…look out gym girl on a mission!

I don’t like running in pouring rain either! I think you made the right call.
