the EEE review!

So a while back I started thinking about getting a ‘netbook’ for my home computer use. I have an iMac that leaves me with a place for photo editing and storage of files, including all my music and iPhone stuff. I wanted something smaller and very portable, basically, as sad as this sounds, for blogging, and going on the Internet and writing. I love writing and sitting at my desk all day at work doesn’t really make me want to go home and sit at a desk some more, therefore the idea of getting a netbook was born. I had looked at a few of them, but basically the only thing that mattered to me was the ability to go online and the portability. I didn’t need much room since I was still going to be using my iMac for photos and ‘heavy duty’ computer work. I found a few that I liked, but I didn’t want to spend more than $300 including shipping. I then looked at product reviews of the few I was considering and then googled the crap out of all of them. I finally picked the Asus EEE 901 Netbook.  Now here are some features that sold me

- Super small and portable

- Longest Battery life for a computer in my price range (by far)

- Came in different colors (white, I wanted a white computer)

- Most RAM for a computer in my price range.

Now when I got the EEE I didn’t really know what to expect, or if I would really like it. I knew the keyboard would take a little bit to get used to, but I didn’t know how long and if it would really work as a computer for me. So I’ve had Baby E for over about two months now and I’ve gotten used to his little quirks here and there, which includes a negative aspect of him is that he gets SUPER hot. I know, I know I could get a fan but really, no extra bones for that. So lets take a photo tour of him.

Here is the side view with him being closed. He, as you can tell, has headphone location so you can listen to music and a plug in location for anyone who might be on dial up. I have never had a problem connecting to the Internet anywhere though, which is nice

As you can tell, it’s pretty small. The mouse screen is located at the bottom and all the normal keys are there as well.

At the top you can see that there is a camera located above the screen. Pretty cool feature. You can see the screen and also the charging cord located on the right side that is currently plugged in.

This is when he’s closed and you are looking down at him. I totally should have taken a picture of it next to my iPhone to show you the true side. Oh well. Soon, perhaps.

So the first few days with the EEE it took a WHILE to get used to the keyboard. I was typing and deleting what I was typing for quite some time. Puts quite a damper on facebook chatting when your sentences are all mixed up and have weird punctuation. After about a week though, I was used to the smaller keys and smaller screen. When I say small screen, I mean it. It’s only about .79 inches in height. So compared to my giant 2 computer screens at work, this took some serious getting used to which included a lot of scrolling. The mouse functions well and once you get used to the fact that the computer is overall smaller, it’s really a great find. I do love the functionality and the speed of the computer as well. I found a few deals on numerous websites that were all under $300 after shopping around a while and the total on my computer was at $271 including 3 days shipping.

So the few downfalls of the computer are that it gets hot after using it for a while and it’s very small, but that’s a given right? You get used to it’s size and you’ll really love the functionality and portability. It charges quickly and really works well for what I use it for, specifically going online and writing. I still need to install Word onto the computer itself, but it comes with a similar program that works just like Word. The computer itself is super easy to use and I am very glad I purchased it and if you are in the market for something small and portable that is quick and user friendly, definitely check out the Asus EEE 901.

As for working out, last night, when I got home from work my knee was a little stiff. It gets like this after a long run on the weekend and sitting at my desk all Monday. I know, I need to remind myself to move and walk around at work. So last night instead of going for my run I did a 20 minute Jillian Shred video and a 20 minute Yoga Video. Sometimes I forget how great yoga is for your muscles. I also am reminded that I have the balance of a 4 year old. All the trading around of the workout schedule means that I’ll just be running tonight after work instead. I think I will go for the five miler I had planned yesterday.  I also must pack for the rodeo tonight. Yehaw!

xoxo

Very snazzy! Enjoy the new toy.

Just a warning that if you computer is constantly overheating you can fry the hard drive. Before I had my apple I put my computer on a book or magazine to help keep it cooler.
My husband just equated it to running with a rubber suit on (how funny is that, he didn’t even know what your blog is about)

Super cute! Glad you’re happy with your purchase :)

I looked at this guy but ended up going with this guy, Netty, http://www.gateway.com/programs/ltseries/index.php. He’s a newer model which has pluses and minus but had overall better “specs” as my hubs calls them. I.e. faster processor and more storage for $50 more than the other competitors.

So far, I love Netty! I was so sick of my huge honkin’ laptop!

Yay for Baby E and Netty!

Between you & MCM Mama, I might have to check this out for when I travel.

I do a lot of work in excel though, & that screen will undo my beloved Lasik surgery!

I need a new computer because mine is way old.

I totally know what you mean – as much as I love to write, after sitting behind a computer all day, it is daunting. Sometimes I work out only to get a typing break!

My MacBook is my portable computer of choice, but if I’d had a good home computer already, I would have checked out a netbook – definitely easier on the wallet! This one looks so impressive for the $$.

Can’t wait to hear about the Rodeo. I know you’ll document it well! Have fun.

Love the baby comp. Ive thought about getting one, but i need to update my laptop first. This baby is 5 years old and slowly dieing. I’m gonna get a sony (white) comp. Its a smaller laptop so i’m happy about that!

great review!

Can you not walk about with the EEE on your head to improve you balance…sounds like a win win to me ;-)

That computer is too cute. I’ve been bugging my husband for something small that I can use for blogging and browsing – something portable that can lay in bed with me or on the couch. Think I’ll forward him this link :)

Nice review. I’ve been thinking about getting one, too. I use my work computer at home and I can’t do too much presonal stuff on it (like saving pictures, etc).

A few of my friends have that laptop at school and they think its pretty neat! Its so small!

Enjoy the rodeo!

This has nothing to do with anything, except THANKS for the new feed link!! Ah it finally worked!! Yayyyyyyy =)

Oh, that thing is so cute and I had no idea they made stuff like that! Love the pet name for it:p Glad your enjoying it and got used to it!

Thanks for the review. I know several people in my office who have been looking at these. Now I can give them your opinions!

Hope you’re enjoying it and not frying your legs while it sits on your lap.

Does it have a DVD or CD ROM drive? If not, then installing Word may be a hassle. What about using something like Goole Docs r Open Office?

I love that you reviewed this — Mr. R is looking for JUST this for his business so he can enter in his clients on the road — LOVE IT!

Interesting! I never heard of these, thanks for reviewing!

I have the same computer ;) I love it, although I still use my larger laptop the majority of the time. I love traveling with the EEE one though, nice and small.
